Time in Nature reduces ADHD symptoms

Today's Youth and Screen Time

Kids today spend more time than ever in front of screens. Many even admit it's too much. A Pew study says 54% of young people feel they are on their phones too often. Too much screen time can lead to problems like anxiety, depression, and poor sleep. Richard Louv, a well-known journalist, calls this "nature-deficit disorder."

The Benefits of Less Screen Time

Teens who are happiest use their phones less than an hour a day, according to a study. It might be tough to convince kids, but it's clear that happier kids are those who do more things in the real world instead of just online.

Studies show that spending time in nature helps kids do better in school, behave better, and be more creative. It also makes them feel closer to nature, so they are more likely to protect it.

For kids with ADHD, being outside is very helpful. While more screen time can make their symptoms worse, exercise and time outdoors can reduce them. One study found that even just looking at nature lowers stress in kids with ADHD, helping them focus better.

Being outside and getting fresh air also helps us sleep better. A study found that a weekend camping trip can reset our body clocks. Spending time in nature can even improve eyesight. Another bonus of spending family time in nature? A better relationship with your child.

How to Help Your Child Enjoy Nature

As parents, you can give your kids real-life experiences to help them disconnect from their screens. Here are a few low-cost, yet priceless, ideas:

  • Go for a hike in a state or local park, or just take a walk in your neighborhood's green areas.

  • Ride bikes on a greenway path.

  • Go fishing.

  • Visit a waterfall.

  • Cool off by swimming in a lake or swimming hole.

  • Rent canoes or inner tubes to float down a river or paddle on a lake.

  • Have a picnic at a spring, lake, or river.

  • Create a scavenger hunt or try geocaching, a real-life treasure hunt that connects kids to nature and others.

  • Take photo’s of nature and your adventures together to download and remember later
